Unveiling America's First Parks: William Penn's 1682 Vision for Philadelphia

William Penn  had a vision for public spaces 🏞️.

In 1682, he drafted the plan for Philadelphia, which included five (!) open squares for the citizens to enjoy. These squares served as the first American public parks 🌳🌲, depicted as yellow squares on the map. 🗺️

In comparison, Boston took a different approach. While the Boston Commons was established as a public pasture ground in 1634, it was only officially recognized as a recreational facility for leisure activities in 1728. 🌲
